Adams - the top student at Dr. Strong's school for boys when David arrives, David soon takes his place Barkis - carriage driver between Blunderstone and Yarmouth, Barkis marries Peggotty after becoming enchanted with her cooking. A miser for most of his life, he leaves Peggotty 3,000 pounds after his death, a very large sum equal to about $308,000 today. Mr Chillip - The querulous doctor who delivers David and faces the wrath of Betsey Trotwood. He later informs David of Mr. Murdstone's remarriage. Clickett (The Orfling) - an unattractive orphan girl from St. Luke's workhouse, who serves as maid to the Micawbers David Copperfield - the hero and "author" of the novel, David is a posthumous child born in Blunderstone after the death of his father. When his mother remarries an abusive man, David is sent to work. He later flees to his aunt in Dover. Read more Clara Copperfield - David's beautiful young mother, she is also a weak woman who is incapable of taking care of herself and her child. She marries Murdstone and has his child, but soon dies from a broken heart after her house and position have been taken over. Creakle - an "ignorant" man and fierce proprietor of Salem House boarding school. Said to speak in a "whisper", he enjoys beating and abusing the children. He fires schoolmaster Mr. Mell after learning of his poverty, and later becomes warden of a jail, where he treats his prisoners with strange kindness. Sophy Crewler - long-time fiancee of Tommy Traddles, Sophy Crewler must take care of a large brood of sisters and ailing parents before marrying Traddles. She soon proves herself to be a sweet-tempered and efficient housewife. Mrs Crupp - landlady of David's lodgings at the Adelphi, she is rather too fond of the brandy and is quite lazy. She also engages in disputes with Betsey Trotwood. Rosa Dartle - cousin of Steerforth and companion of his mother. Rosa apparently had a relationship with Steerforth and loves him deeply, despite his disinterest and the fact that he scarred her face. Her affection twists until she is cruel and unforgiving, and she cannot believe anyone else possibly has true feelings for Steerforth. Mr Dick (Richard Babley) - lodger of Betsey Trotwood's, Dick is a simple man who would have been committed by his brother if Betsey hadn't "saved" him. He realizes he is a bit "mad" but doesn't mind, and spends his time forever working on a petition for his rights. Emily - orphaned niece of Daniel Pegotty. After earning David's affection as a child, Emily attracts the attention of Steerforth and eventually elopes with him, despite her engagement to Ham Peggotty. When he leaves her in her shame, she ends up in horrible conditions in London. Martha Endell - suicidal prostitute and former friend of Emily, she once worked for Mr. Omer until she "fell". She occasionally asks for money and is instrumental in the recovery of Emily. Grainger - friend of Steerforth's who visits David in his lodgings.
Mr and Mrs Grayper - neighbors of Clara Copperfield at Blunderstone. Mr and Mrs Gulpidge - haughty guests at a dinner party thrown by the Waterbrooks. Mrs Gummidge - lone, lorn creeture, a boarder of Dan Peggotty's after her husband drowned. For most of the book Mrs. Gummidge relishes her conditions, but she shines when she gets a chance to support "Dan'l". Uriah Heep- a "umble", ugly individual serving as law clerk and later business partner to Mr. Wickfield. He feels everyone owes him for his unhappy childhood and so uses blackmail to pit people against one another; he shows many hallmarks of narcissistic personality disorder and psychological manipulation. After gaining access to Mr. Wickfield's business he attempts to marry Agnes, and later causes pain for the Strong and Micawber families, but he is soon discovered and sent to prison. He could be considered David's archenemy, although they share many similarities. Mrs Heep - the mother of Uriah Heep. She spoils her child and basically does whatever she tells him to do, but she has perpetuated his bad behavior and encourages his villainy. Mrs Kidgerbury - temporary maid of Dora and David Copperfield. Janet - maid to Betsey Trotwood in Dover, Janet is a pretty but harsh young woman who hates men but eventually marries the local baker. She is responsible for leading David to his aunt's house. Jorkins - business partner of Francis Spenlow in the law firm Spenlow and Jorkins. They use each other as scapegoats to avoid discussing difficult issues, and though he is heard to be a formidable man he is actually quite evasive in conversation. Miss Larkins - 30-something-year-old young woman upon whom David has an adolescent crush. According to David, she toys with his heart, but she is really just living her elaborate life while humoring him. Littimer - "respectable" manservant of Steerforth, Littimer also aids in the virtual abduction of Emily. He patronizes David and was planned to marry Emily. He eventually ends up in prison for attempting to steal money from his employer (after Steerforth). Jack Maldon - a lazy, upper-class cad who has feelings for his married cousin, Annie Strong. His indolent lifestyle is funded by kindly Dr. Strong, but Maldon is ungrateful - he eventually ends up living in India. Markham - a college friend of James Steerforth who attends a dinner party at David Copperfield's lodgings Mrs Markleham - nicknamed "The Old Soldier", she is the meddling mother of Annie Strong, who would have preferred a union between her daughter and Jack Maldon. Mary Anne - a lazy servant of David and Dora Copperfield. David and Dora quarrel over whether to fire her. Charles Mell - a shabby low-class schoolmaster at Salem House who is also a devoted (though not very good) flautist. Not particularly social, he is nevertheless very kind to David and the other boys. He is fired when Steerforth complains of him to Mr. Creakle (through David's fault). He is later heard to be a successful professor in Australia. Wilkins Micawber - an optimistic but penniless gentleman, and benefactor to David, who is forever in debt with tax collectors and borrowing money from his friends. Initially a worker at Murdstone and Grinby wine-bottling factory, he goes through several unsuccessful jobs until he finally begins employment under Uriah Heep. After ousting Uriah's false practices, Micawber and his family emigrate to Australia where he has a successful career as a local magistrate. Emma Micawber - the devoted wife of Mr. Micawber and mother of their five children, kind but nervous Emma originally belonged to a wealthier family but entered a life of hardship with her husband. She always talks fondly of her family but still avows that she "will never desert Mr. Micawber". (And she never does.) Julia Mills - best friend of Dora Spenlow, Julia Mills is instrumental in the courtship of David and Dora. She has evidently been through some sort of heartbreak and perpetually quotes from romance novels. She eventually enters an unhappy marriage with a Scot and moves to India. Mr. Mills - father of Julia Mills Miss Mowcher - Steerforth's dwarf hairdresser. Initially she is portrayed as grotesque and bawdy, gossiping about other socialites with Steerforth, but she later reveals this is a sham to get jobs and avoid harassment by "big people". She later aids in the recovery of Emily and is responsible for the downfall of Littimer. Edward Murdstone - David's Puritanical but strikingly handsome stepfather (father-in-law), second husband of Clara Copperfield, and father to their unnamed child. Murdstone believes that"firmness" is necessary in life and relationships and so imposes his fierce way of life upon Clara until she eventually dies. His violence extends to David also, whom he beats and sends to sadistic Salem House, and later exploits for child labor at his wine bottling factory in London. After the death of Clara, he seems to show some remorse in front of Miss Trotwood, but by the end of the book he has returned to his original ways and has a new wife. Jane Murdstone - Edward Murdstone's equally cruel older sister. A spinster, Jane moves in with Murdstone and proceeds to rob both Clara and Peggotty of their household control. She is a particular enemy of Miss Trotwood, whom she considers to be rude.
